Tiger An – BCIT Journalist – Vancouver, BC
Tiger An is a British Columbia Institution of Technology journalism graduate and a professional communications student at Royal Roads University. He has interests in sports, culture, social issues, and corporate communications. Born and raised in Beijing, China, he moved to Vancouver, British Columbia at the age of 12. Tiger has formed an open-minded yet unique perspectives due to his upbringing. He is also passionate about sports, competing as a student-athlete throughout his high school career.
Growing up, Tiger has always been eager to learn and expand his horizons, and moving to Canada at a young age gave him the opportunity to do so. After studying social science and history at the University of Toronto St. George Campus, Tiger graduated from BCIT’s Online Journalism and Broadcasting program and is currently attending Royal Roads University’s Bachelor of Professional Communication program in hopes better himself and to establish himself in the industry.
As a future professional communicator, Tiger has the expertise to communicate to stakeholders in according manners. Tiger also has the experiences required to be an ethical international and cross cultural communicator due to his travelling experiences having lived in North America, Europe and East Asia. He believes that his understanding and love of different cultures will help him to excel as a professional communicator with in such a diverse society.
Tiger’s goal in journalism is to provide a non-biased platform that shares people’s story that are often overlooked. Coming from a Confucian background, Tiger possesses different principles and perspectives compared to western culture, thus he is able to provide western media and corporations with a more globalized view. Tiger is planning to showcase a non-stereotypical image of each group of people, without personal preferences and political agenda. He wants to be a journalist that respects each different person and reports stories without demonizing sides.
Tiger is equally passionate about sports, influenced by the career of basketball analyst Steven Anthony Smith. He believes that even though he may not compete at a professional level, he can still be a part of the sports industry through other meanings. He believes that his passion for sports, work ethic and determination will eventually bring him success in his pursuing.
Growing up as a student-athlete, Tiger is a top tennis player in British Columbia’s junior divisions, competing internationally and finishing as a finalist in several tournaments. He captained his high school basketball team while also being a key member of the school rugby team, demonstrating leadership skills while being a team player.
